The Masked Singer 3 Recap – Group C Kickoff Live Blog (Videos) mj santilli Recaps, The Masked Singer 43 Comments Group C kicks off tonight with 6 NEW contestants on The Masked Singer. The new masks are: Night Angel, Bear, Astronaut, T-Rex, Rhino and Swan. The Masked Singer continues tonight, with the Group A Playoffs! Celebrities will perform in crazy costumes. ONE will be unmasked by audience vote before the episode ends. After the contestants are presented, with clues, they will perform a song. Then, it’s up to the virtual audience to guess who is behind the mask.
“The Masked Singer” group rounds are a thing of the past, which means it’s time for the semi-finalists to all come together on the same night. Popcorn, Sun, Crocodile, Seahorse, Jellyfish and Mushroom took the stage Wednesday in a special two-hour episode, with only three contestants making it into the finals. That meant, sadly, the other three costumed celebrities were eliminated in a shocking triple unmasking. Guest judge Craig Robinson joined celebrity sleuths Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger on the panel this week.

8:00 p.m. — “Previously on ‘The Masked Singer’!” In the ninth episode, the Group C finals kicked off with Broccoli being eliminated. Host Nick Cannon removed the vegetable’s mask to reveal legendary singer Paul Anka, which only Robin guessed correctly. Broccoli’s elimination signaled the end of the group rounds, as Group C survivors Jellyfish & Mushroom joined up with Popcorn & Sun from Group A and Crocodile & Seahorse from Group B to complete the Super Six. Who will survive tonight’s triple unmasking? Let’s find out!
8:08 p.m. — The Super Six join together for a fun performance of “Take On Me” by a-ha. Next, a mystery judge rolls out on a piano singing “I Will Survive.” Of course we know this is Craig Robinson, but I didn’t know he could sing so well! He will be a guest panelist tonight, but I think his main purpose is to promote the new reality competition series coming to FOX, “The Masked Dancer.” But let’s get down to business. Here’s how tonight works — each singer will compete in a faceoff with the other performer from their original group. The winner will move on to the finale and the loser will be unmasked. That means it is Sun vs. Popcorn, Seahorse vs. Crocodile and Jellyfish vs. Mushroom. Which three will advance? Let’s get started!
8:18 p.m. — Up first is the Seahorse. Even as a young girl, she knew she wanted to sing but she was so “darn shy.” Behind the Seahorse mask, she feels like that little girl discovering her purpose all over again. Intimidated by the Crocodile, Seahorse decides to add choreography to her routine. As a super clue, we see a telescope. Tonight Seahorse is singing “That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars. This is a big diversion from belting out Celine Dion, but one of the most interesting things about the Seahorse is the diversity of her performances. I know she worked hard on it, but the choreography isn’t great. Thankfully she starts showing off her vocals in the second half of the song. The girl can SANG! Nicole says if this was the Olympics for vocal acrobatics, Seahorse would win the gold. For an additional clue, the Men in Black bring out a safe to show who on the panel the Seahorse is connected with. She’s connected to Nick! “Even before this show, Nick was a great host to her.” The panel thinks the Seahorse could be Tori Kelly, Kesha or Sia.
8:30 p.m. — Competing against the Seahorse will be the Crocodile. Competing has made him feel more alive than he has in a long time and his pink jaws have given him the freedom to all the genres of music he loves. Tonight he’s performing for his kids, who he drives eight hours to see after every show. He’s intimidated by Seahorse’s voice, but knows nobody has more heart than him. His super clue is a rat eating pizza. Tonight he’s singing “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith, which is no easy task. He sounds great on this rock anthem and even nails the high scream! Heading into this I was sure Seahorse would win, but I’d give this round to the Crocodile. Robin called it his best performance. The additional clue in his safe reveals the Crocodile is connected to Craig. “You’re one of my favorite actors and it’s so cool to be able to share the screen with you, again.” The panel thinks the Crocodile could be AJ McLean, Nick Lachey or Nick Carter.
8:32 p.m. — The results to the faceoff are in and the singer advancing to the finale is the Crocodile! The Seahorse will be unmasked, but not until the end of the night.
8:47p.m. — Mushroom is the next singer to take the stage. He came to share a message of unity through music. The pandemic has taken the life of someone close to him and he has pledged to make the best of every moment. He’s well aware the Jellyfish has already beaten him once, so there is no shroom for error. His super clue is a clock set to 3:00. Tonight he’s singing “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse. The first couple lines sounded a little off, but Mushroom quickly corrected any issues and gives an entertaining performance with a great vocal, ending with some beatboxing for good measure. Robin loves the message Mushroom is spreading. The additional clue in his safe reveals the Mushroom is connected to Robin. “I would love mixing it up with you again, because this is definitely not the first time we’ve connected.” The panel thinks Mushroom could be Jaden Smith, Jordan Fisher, Leslie Odom Jr. or Keegan-Michael Key.
8:58 p.m. — Competing with the Mushroom is Jellyfish. She feels freedom by putting herself out there, but when she first got to “The Masked Singer” she felt like a fish out of water. Each week she becomes more confident and is astonished by the famous faces she’s already beaten out to this point. Her super clue is a little Eiffel Tower. Tonight Jellyfish is singing “Stay” by Rihanna and she has definitely come into her own as a vocalist. She doesn’t have the vocal acrobatics some of the other contestants display, but she’s got a nice tone and emotional delivery. Robin has enjoyed watching her overcome her fears this season. The additional clue hidden in her safe reveals she is connected to Ken. “We’ve never met, but I can’t say I didn’t try!” The panel thinks Jellyfish could be Chloe Kim, Grimes or Gabby Douglas.
9:00 p.m. — The votes have been counted and the singer headed to the finale is Mushroom! Jellyfish will be unmasked later tonight.
9:10 p.m. — Next on stage is Popcorn. She feels blessed to be on the show because she enjoys taking people to a happy place. The panelists have made her cry behind her mask. She knows the Sun has a killer voice, but she’s going out there to rock it like she’s been doing since the other contestants were in diapers. Her super clue is a STOP sign. Tonight Popcorn is singing “Better Be Good to Me” by Tina Turner. She sounds a lot like her! This is a fun performance and Popcorn’s range is crazy. She has Robin doing praise dances and the panel goes wild. Ken said it was more than a performance, it was a religious experience. The additional clue hidden in her safe reveals Popcorn is connected to Jenny. “We’ve definitely talked before, but never about how we both are published authors.” The panel thinks Popcorn is Mary Wilson, Taylor Dayne or Bette Midler.
9:25 p.m. — Competing against Popcorn is the Sun. She decided to this show for the pure joy and fun. She feels like a kid again, but she didn’t expect her competitive nature to be awakened. The Sun has a hard time expressing her feelings and is scared her dreams will be shot down if she reveals them. Her strategy is to match Popcorn’s intensity in order to make it to the finale. Her super clue is a video of her breathing fire. Tonight the Sun is singing “When the Party’s Over” by Billie Eilish. She begins a cappella and her voice is cutting like a knife. This is emotional, yet understated and Nicole is already sobbing. Nicole says singers like the Sun are the reason she loves music so much. The additional clue in her safe reveals the Sun is connected to Nicole. “Last time we met was in the bathroom.” The panel thinks the Sun could be LeAnn Rimes, Brandi Carlile, Kate Hudson or Emilia Clarke.
9:35 p.m. — The votes are in and the Sun has won this faceoff! Sadly, that means Popcorn will be unmasked, and they’re going to take care of that right now. But before we find out who Popcorn is, we’ll hear what the panel’s first impressions were way back on Episode 1. Nicole thought she was Diana Ross, but now says Taylor Dayne. Everyone else on the panel initially thought Popcorn was Tina Turner. Robin and Ken stick with Tina, but Jenny switches her guess to Taylor Dayne. Craig throws his guess in the ring with Mary Wilson, but quickly pivots to Taylor. It’s finally time to find out who Popcorn is. She unmasks herself to reveal Taylor Dayne. She was great!
9:47 p.m. — Now it’s time for the second unmasking of the night, Jellyfish. Robin initially said Addison Rae, but switched to Gabby Douglas. Jenny thought it was Daisy Ridley, but now says McKayla Maroney. Nicole said it was Sofia Richie, but is now saying Grimes. Ken initially thought it was Yara Shahidi, but now says Chloe Kim. Craig copies Ken’s guess. The Jelly fish pulls off her mask to reveal herself as snowboarder Chloe Kim. Ken was right!
9:59 p.m. — It’s now time for the Seahorse to unmask. Ken initially thought she was Fergie, but now he says Christina Aguilera. Robin switches from JoJo to Tori Kelly. Jenny’s initial choice was Halsey and she’s sticking to it. Nicole thought it was Maren Morris, but now agrees with Robin that Seahorse is Tori Kelly. Craig goes with Tori as well. Finally, it’s time for the Seahorse to unmask, and it is indeed Tori Kelly! What a tough night. I feel like the Seahorse and Popcorn could have both been in the finale in any other year. In two weeks the Sun, Mushroom and Crocodile will compete for the Golden Mask.

9:00 p.m. — “Previously on ‘The Masked Singer’!” In the semi-finals episode, there was a triple unmasking as viewers said goodbye to three of the Super Six. Popcorn was unmasked first, revealing singing veteran Taylor Dayne. Then Jellyfish removed her costume, proving Ken’s guess of Olympian Chloe Kim correct. Finally, pop singer Tori Kelly took off her colorful Seahorse mask. With their eliminations, only three remained in the competition: Mushroom, Sun and Crocodile. Who will win tonight? Let’s go!
9:08 p.m. — Crocodile was sure he would lose to the Seahorse in the Super Six, so he feels blessed to be in the finale. Tonight he picked a song that’s deeply personal to him. Growing up his family was dirt poor, so he mowed lawn after lawn to afford his first album: “Frontiers” by Journey. Tonight he’s singing a song by that same band, “Open Arms.” It’s a massive power ballad that he has no trouble handling vocally. Robin says it felt like Crocodile had been waiting to sing that song his whole life. As an extra clue, Crocodile gives Jenny a gift — a little angel.
9:15 p.m. — Being the Mushroom has been transformative for the next singer. His ultimate inspiration was his daughter. He copied her mannerisms and personality, but she doesn’t even know he’s on the show! He says while most of us have heard his music on the radio, not many of us know him by name. He will sing his daughter’s favorite song for the grand finale, “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder. He’s got a grit in his voice we haven’t heard before, but I shouldn’t be surprised. He sounds different every week! He’s definitely killing this performance. Mushroom’s special gift is for Nicole — cookie dough ice cream.
9:25 p.m. — The Sun has been in the industry since she was a kid. Depending on when the audience discovered her may alter what they think of her. They may see her as a kid with big dreams, a pop princess or the grounded woman she is today. As the Sun, she gets to show that she’s all of those things and more. Tonight she sings a tribute to the person who has loved her through her toughest times, “The Story” by Brandi Carlile. Consistently a vocal powerhouse, this week is no different and the song sounds like a winning anthem to me. The panel thanks the Sun for her inspiration and then she gives Robin a gift — a mistletoe.
9:35 p.m. — It’s time for the final vote of the season. The performer with the most votes will win the Golden Mask trophy. The votes are in and the third place finisher is the Crocodile. Before we find out his true identity, we’ll have to review the first impression guesses from the panel. Ken thought the Crocodile was Bradley Cooper, but now says he is Nick Lachey. Nicole’s first guess was actually Lachey, but now she says it’s Jordan Knight. And Knight was actually Robin’s first guess (oddly enough) but now he says it’s Howie D. Jenny’s first guess was Nick Carter and she’s sticking to it! The time comes for the Crocodile to remove his mask and it is, indeed, Nick Carter! That’s another point for Jenny in the Golden Ear contest.
9:50 p.m. — The singer in second place is Mushroom. That means the Sun is the Season 4 champion! But before she unmasks we have to find out who Mushroom is. The first impression guesses have been retrieved. Jenny thought Mushroom was Maxwell but switched to Ne-Yo. Ken’s first guess was Justin Timberlake, but now says it’s Pharrell. Nicole’s first impression was Donald Glover, but now she says Aloe Blacc. Robin initially thought it was Billy Porter and now agrees with Nicole, it’s Aloe Blacc. Mushroom pulls off his mask and reveals that Nicole and Robin are right. It’s Aloe Blacc!
9:59 p.m. — At last, we find out who is behind the mask of the Season 4 champion, the Sun. But first, Jenny is presented with her Golden Ear trophy for her four correct first impressions. But who did the panel initially think the Sun was? Jenny thought it was Demi Lovato, but changed her mind to LeAnn Rimes. Ken thought it was Gwyneth Paltrow, but now says Mandy Moore. Nicole believed it was Katharine McPhee but now agrees with Jenny, it’s LeAnn Rimes. Robin believed it was Natasha Bedingfield, but now says Katharine McPhee. The Sun pulls off her mask and we finally find out, she’s LeAnn Rimes! Congrats to the country superstar for winning Season 4 with such a different sound than we’ve known her for in the past. That’s a wrap! But Season 5 will be back in the spring.
